Less than two weeks into a New Year, 2 days into a new week, 4 hours into a new day, the challenges of life began to swirl in like a tempest.
Trouble came knocking, our double car repairs "whammy" became a triple "whammy" when the furnace died, and again we are forced to lay it all down and put life in perspective.
The natural mind says...Read Full Post »

Yesterday was quite a double whammy for us, and a double whammy for two friends.
These events solidified for me the value of J.O.Y. that I wrote about last time; Jesus Occupies You.
When life throws you a curve ball…remind yourself, and practice the truth that: Jesus Occupies You. ...Read Full Post »

So the holidays are over, and it’s back to normal, right? Well, except for the fact that there is a fresh sense of hope and an expectation of new beginnings.
January 2nd is the real “first day” of the New Year. Parties are over. Back to work! It’s the day that sets the stage for the future success or failure of those resolutions we...Read Full Post »

After 9 weeks, exactly, our son, Ethan will come home tomorrow from rehab! Halleluia!
This day looked like an impossibility on March 4, 2012 when Ethan suffered a massive stroke 10 days after a foot surgery to correct his crooked toes and lengthen his Achille's tendon.
Many friends have wondered how this could have happened.
Ethan was born with a three chambered heart and no p...Read Full Post »

What’s in a name?
We hear the familiar words of the season from Isaiah 9:
For unto us a Child is born, a Son is given and His name shall be called….Immanuel or Emmanuel... God is with us.
Theophory is the practice of embedding the name of God or a deity in a person’s name, a common practice in the ancient world,

As I was enjoying a brisk morning walk earlier today in 27 degrees (Yikes!), my prayer partner and dear friend shared an encouraging picture of relationship with the Lord Jesus that we could all benefit from, so here it is.
As usual, these little gems seem so simple and so obvious, but we need to be reminded to actually IMPLEMENT them in our lives to derive benefit and grace.

We have joy that we are saved and sealed for heaven. This life, its pleasures as well as its challenges, is passing as we know. We can have joy in the knowledge of our salvation. We are guaranteed that as those who have accepted Christ as Lord and Savior, our names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life. Halleluia!
We have joy when we discover God's purpose, a plan and power at work in our liv...Read Full Post »

Got a call an hour ago. My Aunt Marie, age 92 is on a vent after a sudden bout with pneumonia.
Life can change in an instant. She, even at 92, had her strength, health, mind and heart. We were very close as she lived with my mom and dad for 10 years, and enjoyed being another grandma to our oldest son, Jordan.
My cousin, Rosemarie, the only child, doesn't have the comfort of knowing Jesus. She is scared, and told me Aunt Marie w...Read Full Post »

Just got back from a family reunion weekend camping adventure. Even though we all could not be there all the time during all the three days, we were all together from Friday afternoon through Saturday noon. Swimming in the lake, playing "BananaGrams", grilling burgers over the campfire, telling silly jokes, then singing and jammin' on guitars til midnite....good stuff....makin' memories.
Ever notice that...Read Full Post »

My friend lost her job on Friday. After 28 years, the budget cuts landed on her desk, and with 2 weeks notice, a very long season of her life ended.
It was a real kick in the gut, but not totally surprising considering the economic climate. She had only just shared with me about 5 weeks ago that she felt led to open up the book of Job for her next study. Funny, she said...Read Full Post »

"Explore the Roar" is the slogan of Niagara Falls State Park. Just got back last night and I must say, I have never experienced so grand and powerful a sight!
Watching the white caps forming atop the wavy, choppy waters of the Niagara River, becoming a swirling, treacherous rapids flowing freely over the rim of the falls, cascading with power, with energy, with grace and danger all at once! Hearing the roar of the pounding water and the whipping wind gener...Read Full Post »

I am praying for a sweet friend who has cancer, and will undergo surgical lumpectomy tomorrow.
How do you pray when illness strikes, or some other hardship which seems to be out of your control?
My natural inclination is to pray for complete physical, emotional, and spirtual healing. My natural desire is to see someone I love totally well and without pain. Or to see that ugly, nasty, hardship magically disappear.
But, I have...Read Full Post »

Who do you trust?
A straightforward question. An ordinary, even trite question. Nonetheless, one that challenges us for a thoughtful, sincere reply. Because trust is a big word. Who can you trust with your very life, your deepest needs?
We hear it all the time in very common usage : Trust your instincts, trust your mother, trust the government (?), trust your pastor, trust your friends.

I served as a guest worship leader yesterday and heard a wonderful sermon from
a guest minister. He based it on John 17:20 "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them."
That, in itself, is a beautiful thought....to be at home in the Father's love wherever you are. Rev. Don illustrated the uniqueness of who we are and the unique way in which God loves everybody. First, we are...Read Full Post »
