Life had resumed to “normal”. Mom was doing well managing our home and even took up some babysitting. Sometimes I wondered if this was what being a mom was all about….cleaning, cooking, caring for kids…..and I decided I wasn’t interested, especially since I often had to be mother’s helper. So boring!! So not fun!
I longed for something more. I enjoyed music, and still studied piano. But, I also loved to sing and that summer introduction to guitar kept begging me to branch out. My parents heard my heart….isn’t that amazing? Through all their troubles, my wish still got through. God bless them.
One evening, as dad came up the porch after work, passing by the big bay window, I noticed a big black bag or something in his hand. He opened the door and called to me. “Surprise!” It was a guitar!!
I couldn’t believe my eyes! He had picked it up from some guy at work, and it was mine!! Woo hoo!
Without missing a beat, (no pun intended), I went at it trying to recall everything my friend, Cathy, had taught me just a couple months back. Not so good, I’m afraid.
But, the window was about to open! Praise God!
Our school had a nun, Sr. Caitlin, who invited any 7th or 8th grade student who was interested to come and learn to play guitar so we could start a worship band! Are you kidding?!!! I was ecstatic, and a little nervous.
I knew mom and dad could barely afford my piano lessons, so taking up guitar was out of the question. God knew it, too. So He opened the window I needed. Free training and a place to use what I learned immediately!
Life changed dramatically for me. I was playing and studying on my own every free minute. Soon, I was singing and playing in church, and teaching my sisters and other kids. Music filled our home in a new and joyous way. And my “calling” as a worship leader began its formation.
Over the next few years, through high school, different people helped form our band into something special and we played at one service every Sunday. We even recorded an album! During this time, I came to be the leader, up at the microphone, directing the band, choir and leading the congregation.
One professional musician in our church, who worked as NBC studios orchestra leader, took the helm for a number of years. He invited me to sing with his big band orchestra from time to time and taught me nuances of phrasing and how to arrange a song. What a gift…actually many gifts. His training prepared me for years of studio singing and performing with big band orchestras.
So, did I mention that God works things together for good in the lives of those who love Him and trust Him….even when the path is confusing and unclear? I am in awe of how God has been the Maestro in my life. He knew the gifts He created in me, for His pleasure, and His glory, and my fulfillment.
And it was He that provided the means for their development and discovery.
Have you ever traced the hand of God in your life? Is something stopping you from wondering, asking, discovering His plan for you? If you look, you will find it's a good fit.
If my story in any way inspires you to take some steps in God’s direction, then perhaps you will also enjoy this invitation….
I love this promise from Isaiah, Chapter 1: 18-19
Come now, and let us reason together, said the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If you be willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.”
God gives us a fresh start through His Son, Jesus Christ. Clean slate, forgiveness and a new beginning. Hope for the journey, giftedness and open doors and windows to express those gifts. There is a fresh and inexhaustible supply of His presence and wisdom for the asking, each and every day. Look in His direction......here is another surprising personal story I shared a while back.
Jesus just blew me away! God bless you as you learn more of Him!
