GOD BLESS AMERICA! There. I said it. And I mean it. And I don't care who thinks it is politically INcorrect, because it is actually HISTORICALLY correct. Our nation was founded on Biblical principles. And though we have strayed far from being the Christian nation, the godly nation we were in 1776, the words of the Declaration of Independence are still housed under glass in Washington, DC and written on the walls of hallowed institutions, and STILL FOUND in history text books.
Most recently, I was blessed this morning to listen to National Public Radio announcers share in the recitation of the entire document.
Something stirs within my heart when I hear those bold, Divinedly inspired words, even though my battles are not the same as our colonial ancestors against England.
"When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. "
Read the rest of it at EarlyAmerica.com as the writers list their grievances against the King of England, (notice the similarity of some issues today) clearly thought out, completely substantiated and then, don't miss the closing paragraph.
Look at the list of men who pledged their "lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor" . How did they have the resolve, the courage to lay everything down for the cause of freedom?
"With a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence".
The ensuing battle for Independence we know as The Revolutionary War, from 1775 - 1783, cost each of these men everything they had in order to win for this nation the sovereign freedom from tyranny, religious persecution, and the guarantee of individual rights we so often take for granted today. As we examine our nation's role in the world today, and our own hearts, do we honor the sacrifices of these patriots and uphold the legacy of their courageous stand for God-given rights? Do we recognize our history is actually HIS-story, His providential hand in our nation's birth?
El Shaddai, the Almighty, the Mountain, steadfast, immovable, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, God of history, Creator, Eternally capable of supplying all things to His people, Triune God, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, God the Giver of Life, forgive our insolence, our apathy, our idolatry of worldly systems and pleasures. Inspite of our disobedience, have mercy and because of Your unfailing love.....
