"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Psalm 90:12
Life is brief. Taking an accounting of how we spend our days can reveal much about us. At this time of year, many will pause to consider what the past year brought through successes and failures, trials and victories. Then, with a wise analysis, some will plan and hope and dream about the coming year. How can life be better?
Many will pray for divine guidance about these things. Gaining wisdom from God Almighty just can't be beat! I took to heart, quite a long time ago, that nothing remains except that which has eternal consequence. Wow. Talk about a re-focusing!
We know life is short. If I am blessed to live almost 100 years like my great Aunt Helen who will be 100 in August 2015, in good health and with a sharp mind, what will I point to in a review of my life that had eternal consequence?
Scripture says, "Three things remain, faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love." I Corinthians 13:13
My hope is that I will be able to say I loved well, sincerely, authentically. And I know that in my own strength I have failed, and I will fail. But, Christ within me equips me to do more than I could ever do on my own. To know so great a love as Christ's for me compels me to love others as well!
I hope not only that my family and friends will say nice things about me. My hope is that anyone who knows me will say, "She loves and serves the Lord. Her words and her heart encouraged me to trust Jesus."
THAT has eternal consequence. And I hope to enjoy eternity with many I have yet to meet, and those I already know and love and pray for.
How about you?
Yes, indeed, Lord Jesus, teach me not to waste a moment of precious time. This Advent season, I pray that many will find hope, forgiveness, peace and eternal joy through You, Jesus, as I have.
Make me more effective by Your strength, in Your wisdom and Your power. Amen!
