"Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man." Acts 17:29
The apostle Paul seized the moment God had so beautifully provided to speak to the assembly of scholarly leaders in Athens. Surrounded by many statues of Greek gods, Paul noticed one altar marked "to the unknown God".
Pow! An opening to introduce the One True God to these learned men. After multiplying their gods to the utmost, they still had the feeling there was a god about whom they had no knowledge. And we know the Greeks elevated knowledge!
So, in their quest for knowledge they listened as Paul explained that the One True Creator of Heaven and Earth wants them to know Him and understand: He had indeed tolerated idolatry long enough. God is not made of human skill and earthly materials.
He is the very Giver of Life, and Sustainer of All Creation. He is not distant, or stoically silent as a statue made of bronze or clay. He has revealed Himself in the flesh, even as we are flesh, through His Son, Jesus Christ, the Messiah.
It was time for ignorance to be destroyed by knowledge of the Holy One. It was time for great intellects to understand that we are His creation, made in His image and likeness. It is logical that Mighty God is beyond what we think Him to be.
Paul then shared the truth of the powerful work of Jesus through His death and resurrection. Many of those scholars scoffed, but many declared they would "hear Paul again." WIsdom seeks truth above all.
How many of us truly seek to know the Holy One? Do we substitute false gods for true relationship with Jesus, the Offspring of God? He is the one who has made possible our position as offspring of the same Holy God. He is the Vine and we are the branches. He has breathed life into us, and made us part of Himself. We are His own.
We are body, soul and spirit, a trinity of being, born of the Most High Trinity of BEING, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We are His offspring, His beloved children, and He calls us to worship Him together, as the family of God. How does that make you feel???
Lord, today I rejoice that even as this Christmas time is all about YOU, still you make it about ME. I am humbled by Your intense love. Thank you that I am your dwelling place because I welcome you into my heart. Please fill me with your wisdom, knowledge, truth and power more and more to serve you with joy and gladness. Glory to God in the highest! Amen.
